Kansas drivers cash in at Red Cloud

RED CLOUD, NE (May 18)—Three of the six feature winners at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, May 18, hailed from the neighboring state and found their way to victory lane.

            Troy Johnson led the opening lap of the IMCA Modified feature before the yellow flew on lap 2 for a two-car tangle.  While under caution, Johnson pulled into the pits and did not return.  Jordan Grabouski inherited the lead on the restart, but the jinx on the leader continued as Grabouski lost power on lap 6 and had to pit.  That gave the lead to Jason Schoenberger of Gorham, KS.  Schoenberger was chased by Tim Watts, Lonnie Schriner and Johnny Saathoff but no one could catch him.  Watts finished second in the 20-lap race, followed by Schriner, Dusty Blake, and Saathoff.  Johnson, Grabouski, and Schoenberger won the three heat races.

            Jason McCartney of Smith Center, KS, led all 20 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature but really had to earn it.  Five cars chased McCartney the last half of the race, including heat one winner Matt Streit, Brett Behrends, Wayne Walker, Jason Smidt and Josh Hudson.  The top six stayed nose-to-tail but McCartney held on to the checkers.  Walker finished a close second, followed by Streit, Behrends, and Smidt.  Martin Newlin won the other heat race.

            Mike Shriver of Hastings led all 12 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature to pick up his first win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.  Rocky Zimmerman kept Shriver in sight but could not make a pass and had to settle for the runner-up spot.  Heat two winner Jim Buss placed third, followed by Wade Wagenblast and Joe McDole.  Shriver was victorious in the other heat race.

            Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings won their third Cruiser feature at The Speed Bowl this season, leading from green to checkered.  Heat race winners Josh & Chris Graczyk were second, followed by Drew Barry & Ethan Vogler.

            After finishing second to Andy Sole in the heat race, Matthew Ford of Juniata came back to win the 4-cylinder Young Gun feature.  

            The Mod Lites made a special appearance, and the veteran Bud Lee of Salina, KS, put a thumping on the field.  After easily winning the heat race, Lee led all 10 laps of the feature.  Brandon Gray finished second and Travis Smith third.

            The regular five divisions return this Friday night, May 25.  Racing begins at 8:00 p.m.
