Johnson notches Red Cloud Win
By Mike
Hughes
RED CLOUD, NE (June 8)—Troy
Johnson finally got the monkey
off his back Friday night, June
8, at the Speed Bowl in Red
Cloud, NE.
The
Concordia, KS, driver has led
the IMCA Modified main event
twice earlier this season, only
to have problems and watch the
finish of those races on the
infield. But Johnson took the
lead at the drop of the green
and led all 20 laps to finally
make his way to the winner’s
circle. Hometown driver Lonnie
Schriner gave chase most of the
race but could never get close
enough to make a pass and had to
settle for second. Josh
Carpenter, Brian Calhoon and
Scott Smith rounded out the top
five. Heat race winners were
Lonnie Veteto and Johnson.
Brett Behrends of Webber, KS,
became the first two-time winner
in the always competitive IMCA
Stock Car division. Chad Wulf
led the first 7 laps before his
motor let go, giving Jason Smidt
the lead on the restart. Heat
two winner Behrends made his
move on lap 12 when he drove
under Smidt in turn four and
held on to the checkers. Smidt
was second, followed by Matt
Streit, heat one victor Martin
Newlin, and Wayne Walker.
Jim
Buss of Hastings took the lead
away from Mike Shriver on lap 4
of the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock
feature to drive to his third
Speed Bowl victory. A late race
caution bunched the field up for
the finish, but Buss held off
heat one winner Shriver for the
win. Rocky Zimmerman finished
third, followed by heat two
winner Joe McDole and Kyle
Bond. Dillon Thompson rolled
his car in the second heat but
was not injured.
Adam
Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings
picked up their fourth Cruiser
feature win at Red Cloud aleady
this season. The Hastings duo
led all 8 laps of the caution
free race. Heat race winners
Drew Barry & Justin VanWey
finished second.
After winning the heat race,
Andy Sole of Nelson led all 5
laps of the 4-cylinder Young Gun
feature to make his way to
victory lane. Troy Porter
finished second.
The
regular five divisions return
this Friday night, June 15.
Racing begins at 8:00 p.m. The
Good Ol’ Time Racing Association
(GOTRA) will also be on hand.
